Ethiopian protesters 'massacred' =
Ethiopian police=20 massacred 193 protesters in violence following last year's disputed = elections,=20 an independent report says.

It said the government used "excessive force" to crack down on = protesters who=20 claimed the elections had been rigged.=20

Ethiopian security forces said 58 people, including seven police, had = died=20 during an attempted revolution.=20

Ethiopian judge Wolde-Michael Meshesha, who carried out the = investigation,=20 has since fled the country.=20

People took to the streets of the capital, Addis Ababa, and other = cities in=20 June and November last year to protest the outcome of a general election = in May.=20

The report said that the government had concealed the true extent of = deaths=20 at the hands of the police.=20

It said that 193 people had been killed, including 40 teenagers. Six=20 policemen were also killed and some 763 people injured.=20

They had been shot, beaten and strangled.=20

The judge described the deaths as a massacre and said the toll could = well=20 have been higher.=20

"The police fired, definitely, as a kind of massacre of the = demonstrators -=20 especially in Addis, where more than 160 civilians were dead," by = shooting, he=20 told the BBC.=20

He said there was no doubt that excessive force had been used.=20

He claimed he had been put under pressure to alter his findings and = fled into=20 hiding in Europe when he received anonymous death threats.=20

Democracy

More than 100 opposition leaders, journalists and aid workers were = rounded up=20 during the protests and are currently on trial, accused of treason and = attempted=20 genocide.=20

Police records showed 20,000 people were arrested during = the=20 anti-government protests, the judge said.=20

The European Union's chief observer during the May 2005 elections, = Ana Gomes,=20 told AP news agency the report exposed real doubts about the Ethiopian=20 government's commitment to democracy.=20

"It is time the EU and US realise that the current regime in Ethiopia = is=20 repressing the people because it lacks democratic legitimacy and is = actually=20 weak," she said.=20

"It is driving Ethiopia to more poverty, conflict and war."=20

In January, Britain withheld $87m in aid because of concerns over the = unrest.=20
