Current situation in Cyprus (debate) (em inglês)
Mr President, in Cyprus, the Eurogroup has split the euro. Euro deposits there are worth less than 60% of similar amounts deposited in Germany. Do not tell us that everything has been done to fight tax evasion. Solution one caused the European deposit guarantee to implode, and then it compelled small depositors to allow the money-laundering business to go on. Solution two, when it came, had given most criminals enough time to organise capital flight.
Do not tell us that everything is now being done to accelerate the banking union. Why do you not, Commissioner, denounce the German Government, which is actively slowing it down to suit its own electoral calendar?
Commissioner Rehn, Commission, assume your responsibility, stop hiding behind the Troika. If you want to move against tax evasion and impose fiscal responsibility, why did you not lift a finger to stop capital flight from my country, Portugal? Why did you, instead, let the Troika bless a tax amnesty for tax evaders and other criminals...
